Who was Joe

Joe was an athlete and a coach. A favorite uncle, brother and son. A valued friend. On the outside, this strong young man seemed fine. Unfortunately, he lived with a painful secret. Joe Struggled with bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression. In 1994, at the age of 26, Joe Laurencelle couldn’t cope any longer, and took his own life.

We’re out to change a lot, family, friends and advocates in Joe’s memory, his family has dedicated themselves to erasing the stigma associated with mental illness in our society. The foundation also recently featured in a PBS special on adolescent depression. To ensure that your people get the hepp they need, JJLMF works in collaboration with other organizations, including Wayne State university’s Department of Psychiatry, which provides free help to those age 18 and under who do not have medical insurance.
